An Urbana man who pleaded guilty to assault charges in connection to a robbery attempt from earlier this year was sentenced to community control Monday.

Larry H. McLaughlin, 67, was placed on community control for three years in relation to an April 4 incident.

On that date, Urbana police officers were dispatched to the area of 115 S. Main St. in reference to a person being robbed and stabbed. During a theft, McLaughlin reportedly pulled a knife and stabbed a man’s stomach.

The victim was not transported to a hospital following the incident.

Once located, McLaughlin refused to follow police orders before he was tackled and continued to struggle with officers as they attempted to place him in a cruiser. He pleaded guilty to a fourth degree felony assault charge in addition to misdemeanor charges of assault, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest on Sept. 8.

As part of community control, McLaughlin was ordered to obtain an assessment for and successfully complete alcohol and anger management counseling as arranged by the Adult Parole Authority. He is subject to random drug screens, is prohibited from purchasing, possessing or consuming alcohol and may not be in a bar.

McLaughlin was ordered to write a letter of apology to an Urbana police officer he attempted to kick with pointed cowboy boots on April 4.

McLaughlin was fined $250 and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $394.20.

If community control is revoked, McLaughlin faces a 14-month prison sentence.
