Urbana City Council, during its 7 p.m. meeting today in municipal court chambers, is scheduled to hear the first reading of a resolution allowing for repairs to be made to a heavily traveled bridge on the west side of town.
The measure seeks authorizing for preliminary approval between the city and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for the repair of various bridges within ODOT District 7, which locally includes the Miami Street bridge that spans over Dugan Run near the Depot Coffee House.
The district-wide project, which will be completely funded by the state, calls for the identified bridges to be repaired by refacing abutments, fixing scour issues and patching piers.
Also during the meeting, council will vote on whether or not to suspend the three-readings rule and pass on first reading an emergency resolution authorizing the acceptance of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Grant as administered by the Ohio Attorney General.
The resolution states the city has received and administered VOCA grants since 2000 through the law department for victim advocate personnel wages, benefits and related equipment. This year, the city has been awarded over $40,000 in federal funds through the grant, which is to be used for support services for crime victims and witnesses in the jurisdiction of the Champaign County Municipal Court.
In other business:
•Council will hear the second reading of a resolution authorizing Director of Administration Kerry Brugger to collaborate with Urbana City Schools Superintendent Charles Thiel to develop an agreement for the joint construction of public infrastructure to enhance public health and safety with respect to the planned site of the pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade school facility near the Champaign Family YMCA.
•An ordinance that would amend the city’s official zoning map by rezoning the Dollar Tree property from its current B-1 zoning district in Urbana Township to a B-2 general business zoning district within city limits will undergo a second reading.
•The first reading of an ordinance establishing chapter 171 of the city’s codified ordinances as well as amending chapter 173 as needed to comply with the statewide municipal income tax reform will be heard by council.
