A man was sent to prison for a total of eight years Wednesday for sex crimes involving a minor.

Brian G. Cantrell, 37, received a 60-month prison sentence for a fourth degree felony charge of pandering obscenity involving a minor, a third degree felony charge of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and two misdemeanor counts of soliciting.

Cantrell was arrested on May 2 after the Urbana Police Division were contacted by a resident who received unwanted phone calls and texts from a stranger, later found to be Cantrell, soliciting him for nude sex photos and sexual activity.

Police began monitoring the reporting person’s phone and, through continued communications with Cantrell, arranged for him to meet the resident Cantrell believed to be a 16-year-old in the city.

After Cantrell arrived to the agreed upon meeting location, he was taken into custody by an undercover police officer.

The unlawful sexual conduct with a minor charge stems from conduct committed between Aug. 1, 2015, and Sept. 30, 2015.

Prior to the sentencing hearing, Cantrell was classified as a Tier II sexual offender.

A journal entry on Wednesday’s hearing states Cantrell committed the offense while he was under post release control supervision from a 2013 case for pandering obscenity. The court imposed an additional 36 months to the sentence due to the post release control penalty leading to the total eight year prison sentence.

He was also fined $250.

Upon his release, Cantrell is subject to post release control for a period of five years.
