Airport parking lot work set to begin

All operations at Grimes Field in Urbana will go on as normal during scheduled maintenance and repair of the airport’s parking lot and two main entrances, Airport Manager Elton Cultice told the Daily Citizen on Tuesday.

Urbana City Council on July 19 approved a contract with Stevens Pavement Care to perform the asphalt maintenance and repair work at a cost of $11,870.

Cultice said work is expected to begin on Sunday, July 31, and the company has agreed to work around The Airport Cafe’s normal business hours.

“Work will start on Sunday after the restaurant closes at 2:30 p.m. then continue on Monday (restaurant closed on Mondays),” he said. “If they do not get done on the first weekend, they will continue the following weekend.

“Once all the work is done, they then have to let it sit for a week before they can stripe it, so it could take two, maybe three weekends, (to complete) depending on how it progresses,” Cultice added.

The parking lot will be open to airport visitors as normal Tuesday through Sunday afternoon through completion of the project.

As for the scheduled work, Stevens Pavement Care will be repairing several patches of asphalt, crack-filling the pavement, applying a sealcoat, restriping parking lines and installing parking blocks.
