Urbana City Schools voters will have one chance to renew an operating levy before it falls off the books at the end of the year.

The school district’s 5.9-mill, five-year operating levy renewal is on the Nov. 3 ballot. The levy will bring in an estimated $1.19 million next year.

The school board chose not to ask voters to renew a second levy, the 14.88-mill one, because it feared that voters may not renew either one if multiple levies were put on the ballot. The 14.88-mill levy may be placed on a special election ballot next year and may ask voters to approve it as a “continuous” levy, school board officials said previously. A continuous levy approval would mean voters would not vote for it again.

The board has been attempting to lengthen the time between levies to fight voter fatigue and save money. Districts pay a portion of election costs when they put issues on ballots. Urbana schools voters previously approved a 3.5-mill permanent improvement levy as continuous.
