MECHANICSBURG – Every year on the second Saturday of July, local organizations, businesses and village residents come together to celebrate Independence Day during an event known as Summer Celebration. The 2016 version, which will take place on July 9, is touted by Our Towne Mechanicsburg (OTM) – organizers of the event – as the largest Summer Celebration to date.

As is tradition, the daylong event will kick off with a parade through the village beginning at 11 a.m. at Heritage Cooperative, 140 S. Main St. Organizations wishing to participate in the parade can contact OTM Chairman Dan Eck at 614-579-2120 or at [email protected].

Following the parade, the Ohio Village Muffins, an 1860s-era baseball team, will take on a local group of Mechanicsburg baseball players at 12:30 p.m. at the high school ball diamond.

“The highlight of this year’s celebration is the return of professional tractor pulls to Goshen Park in Mechanicsburg,” Eck said.

Sponsored by McGuire Trucking & Agricultural Services and The Dairy Parlor, the tractor pull will take place from noon to 6 p.m. There is a $5 admission charge per person to enter the park between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Eck added vendors will be on hand at Goshen Park, and seating for the tractor pull will be available on the hill at the park. Vendors interested in participating in Summer Celebration can receive more information by calling 614-584-2467.

After 4 p.m., the admission fee to enter Goshen Park will be waived as numerous activities are scheduled to take place including the Children’s Sand Dig sponsored by Mechanicsburg Sand & Gravel at 5 and 7 p.m.

“Disc jockey Drew Goings will keep the festivities going into the evening after the tractors pull out at 6 p.m.,” Eck said. “At dusk, local musician Amy Blanton will help us honor America with the singing of the national anthem, followed by the traditional fireworks display at approximately 10 p.m.

“Our Towne Mechanicsburg would like to thank Tim’s Towing and the Cassady family for sponsoring the fireworks display for the second year in a row. It is this sponsorship that allows Our Towne to bring such an impressive fireworks display to the village each year,” Eck added.
