Group donates to assist local cancer patients

On May 27, the Champagne County Wine’ers Club presented a check for $500 to the Cancer Association of Champaign County. Donations to CACC, an all-volunteer organization, provide Champaign County cancer patients with prescriptions, cancer-related prostheses, doctor bills, hospital treatments and gasoline.

The Champagne County Winer’ers Club was formed in 2005 as a walking club with four members recovering from a variety of physical challenges. The group walked and whined about their ailments, so decided to call themselves the Wine’ers Club. The club has grown to 20-plus members who hold “official meetings” at the Depot Coffee House on Friday mornings. Money is raised from fines for breaking the rules (which change as time goes on) and donations.
