A driver who was taken to a hospital via CareFlight following an injury crash in Johnson Township was treated and released as of Thursday afternoon.

According to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Michael D. Jenkins, 41, of Troy, was flown to Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, after he was involved in a two vehicle injury crash Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies along with Johnson-St. Paris Fire and EMS responded to a crash in front of 11762 W. U.S. Highway 36 at 3:03 p.m.

Upon arrival, it was determined through evidence and statements that Donald H. Rose, 78, of Conover, was driving a light blue 2004 Dodge Intrepid eastbound on West U.S. Highway 36.

Jenkins, who was driving a black 1992 Dodge pick-up truck, was in front of Rose and was slowed or stopped in traffic, preparing to make a left turn into a driveway. Rose advised he did not see any brake lights or turn signals on the truck and did not realize it was stopped and struck the back end of the truck.

Rose was cited for assured clear distance ahead after information was gathered on the scene.

Minutes before this crash, four minors were in a vehicle that crashed in Concord Township after the driver tried to evade a sheriff’s deputy.

At 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, a deputy was traveling eastbound on Zimmerman Road with a radar activated when a vehicle traveling westbound approached at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was traveling at 73 mph.

The deputy proceeded to turn around on the vehicle in order to make a traffic stop and the driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old female, accelerated around a curve in the road. As the deputy rounded the curve the vehicle had disappeared.

The deputy began searching for the vehicle and discovered the vehicle off the north side of the roadway in a wooded area. The driver exited the vehicle and began running towards the deputy waving her arms in an attempt to flag him down.

The deputy went to the vehicle checking for injuries and the driver advised that she observed him turn around so she attempted to evade him. She stated she attempted to turn up into a driveway, but lost control of her vehicle and went off the north side of the roadway, striking a mailbox and traveling across a grass portion of a yard before striking a pole and coming to rest in the wooded area.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage.

Three other juvenile males, all 15-years-old, were in the vehicle.

JSP Fire and EMS responded to the scene to check all occupants. The three males were checked at the scene and did not require any medical treatment while the driver was transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital.

The crash is under investigation by the sheriff’s office.

Heading into Labor Day weekend, Sheriff Matt Melvin urges county residents to buckle up, drive sober and to not text and drive as the county’s roadways will be busy.

Through Sept. 3, the sheriff’s office has responded to 273 total crashes which is less than the 287 they responded to through Sept. 3, 2014. The number of injury crashes is down from 90 to 88 over the same period time but the department has responded to two fatal crashes this year versus zero fatal crashes last year.
