The Champaign County Memorial Foundation Board held its May 16 meeting at the Champaign Family YMCA and then observed the Y’s recent addition of handicapped-accessible automated door openers for the women’s and men’s locker rooms at the Y that were donated by the Memorial Foundation.

The Champaign County Memorial Foundation exists for the benefit of the elderly citizens of Champaign County. Assistance is provided through grants to entities providing services and opportunities that improve the quality of life for seniors who live in the county. The Memorial Foundation donated $5,000 to the YMCA for the handicapped-accessible door openers, which enable men and women to enter the locker rooms both from the main hallway and the swimming pool.

“The Champaign Family YMCA has hundreds of members and program participants who are elderly or have physical limitations, and the automatic door openers are a wonderful asset,” said YMCA CEO Paul Waldsmith. “The Y is committed to serving people of all ages and abilities, and we receive compliments every day on the door openers by people with limited mobility.”
