The cause of death for a driver in a crash in May was ruled multiple blunt force trauma, according to a coroner’s report filed on Aug. 13.

Charles Q. Gage IV, 19, of Columbus, died on May 14 after a single-vehicle crash on state Route 55 in the south end of Urbana.

The coroner’s report states Gage, the driver of the vehicle, was traveling eastbound and lost control on a curve. The vehicle exited the roadway, turned sideways and rolled over multiple times.

Gage was thrown from the vehicle and was unresponsive when paramedics arrived. He died a short time later despite resuscitative measures. A passenger who was seated in the front of the vehicle was transported to the emergency room in fair condition.

An examination of the vehicle showed extensive damage, including a collapse of the vehicle roof on the driver’s side. An examination of the body revealed numerous abrasions to the lower extremities and the right side of the abdomen.

The report notes a toxicology report showed Gage tested positive for an intoxicating level of alcohol and showed the presence of cocaine.

Gage’s crash was one of three fatal crashes that occurred in Champaign County this year.

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s website, there was one fatal crash in Champaign County last year, six in 2013 and six in 2012.
