Driver indicted for aggravated vehicular homicide

A Champaign County grand jury indicted a man Thursday for multiple felony charges in relation to a fatal crash from last November.

Lloyd J. Eaton, III, 22, was indicted for two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide in addition to one count each of aggravated vehicular assault, vehicular assault, operating a vehicle under the influence of a listed controlled substance or a listed metabolite of a controlled substance and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them.

A press release issued by the Urbana Police Division on Nov. 28, 2015, noted police were continuing their investigation into a three-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Nov. 27, 2015. The crash occurred at the entrance to Tractor Supply Company, 1637 E. U.S. Route 36.

Tanya J. Morgan, 38, of Urbana, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash as a result of injuries sustained during the crash.

At the time of the press release, a preliminary investigation showed that a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII, driven by Eaton, of St. Paris, was traveling westbound on East U.S. Route 36 and was turning southbound into the drive of 1637 E. U.S. Route 36. As Eaton’s vehicle made its turn, it was struck by a 1998 Dodge Ram, driven by Derek Ramsey, of Urbana.

Ramsey had been traveling eastbound on East U.S. Route 36.

The collision then caused Eaton’s vehicle to spin and strike a 2015 Toyota Rav4 driven by Lon Peters, of Mechanicsburg, which was stopped in the driveway of 1637 E. U.S. Route 36.

Morgan was a front seat passenger in Eaton’s vehicle during the crash. Tiffany Wilford, of Urbana, was a back seat passenger in Eaton’s vehicle and had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the Urbana Fire Division before being flown to Miami Valley Hospital via CareFlight.

Eaton was transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital for minor injuries where he was treated and released.

Urbana Police were assisted in the crash investigation by Champaign County Coroner Dr. Joshua Richards and members of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and the Multi-County Crash Investigation team.
