A new police cruiser could be patrolling the streets of Urbana if City Council approves the purchase during its 6 p.m. meeting today in municipal court chambers.

City administration is recommending the purchase of a 2016 Dodge Charger from White’s Chrysler at a cost of $30,179. The cruiser would replace the Urbana Police Division’s unit No. 36 cruiser, a 2012 Dodge Charger with 90,000-plus miles on it.

Instead of trading in the 2012 model toward the cost of a new cruiser, administration is recommending it be reallocated to another division, sold at auction on July 4, or placed on GovDeals.com.

Council will also vote on a request from administration to sign off on a purchase order to Public Entities Pool in the amount of $147,580 for one year to cover the cost of property and casualty insurance.

The deal, if approved, would cost the city 9 percent more than the 2015 premium due in large part to the improvements to the Urbana Water Reclamation Facility, which has increased the insured value for city buildings.

Ordinances up for vote

Council will hear the third and final readings of several ordinances and resolutions, including an ordinance to amend chapter 963 of the city’s codified ordinances to establish a board to oversee operations of Oak Dale Cemetery.

Director of Administration Kerry Brugger, who is currently responsible for supervision of the cemetery, said in March that after conducting an extensive review of the current procedures at the city-owned cemetery, he feels it would benefit from the oversight of a board.

Brugger added that the primary goals of the board would be to oversee operations and help the city put together a strategy for the long-term future of the cemetery.

If approved, the board would consist of at least five voting members appointed by the mayor and a nonvoting member of council appointed by the president of council.

Also up for vote is an ordinance that outlines an agreement between the city and Urbana Township involving the property at 638 Childrens Home Road, which currently lies within the township.

The ordinance calls for the city to provide a statement of services (emergency services, utilities, and road maintenance and repair) to the property, and for the property to be annexed into the city.

Under the annexation agreement, the city would make a single payment in lieu of taxes of $542.46, which is a prorated value of estimated property tax based on current valuation and levies.

New business

Council is set to hear the first readings of the following measures:

•An ordinance to submit amendments to the Charter of the City of Urbana to the electors of the city as requested by council.

•An ordinance establishing salary and benefits for central staff employees.

•A resolution to authorize Brugger to prepare and submit an application to the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) for the Powell Avenue/Cemetery Sanity Sewer Project, and to participate in the OPWC State Capital Improvement Program.
