Cable resident Colby Watson won this year’s Grand Champion Steer award – a first-time win for him in this category.

Watson, 15, also received the Michelle Dibert Memorial Rotating Trophy this year.

It’s hard sometimes to guess what a judge is looking for in a winning animal, he said.

“You never really know. I always hope for the best. It’s exciting,” Watson said.

Watson does not show other animals, he focuses solely on steer. When he’s not working on his projects, he spends his free time playing basketball.

This year’s Reserve Grand Champion Steer award went to Emma Anway of Urbana. Anway, 18, is a past Grand Champion (2008) and Reserve Grand Champion (2012) winner with her animals. This is her last year showing at the Champaign County Fair. She said she was thankful for her family’s support the past 10 years.

Anway is another that only focuses on steer for her projects. She suggests no matter what a person shows at competitions or fairs to keep a positive outlook.

“Always be a good sport,” she said.
