A Cable man was indicted by a Champaign County grand jury last week for allegedly assaulting a man with a metal pipe.

Kevin L. Connolly, 38, of 7481 Stevenson Road, Cable, was indicted last Thursday for four second degree felony counts of felonious assault.

The charges stem from an Aug. 5 incident where Champaign County Sheriff deputies were dispatched to a Wayne Township residence in reference to an assault with a pipe. A court statement filed in the Champaign County Municipal Court states the victim advised that Connolly struck him in the head with a metal pipe and that he thought his ankle was broken.

The statement notes the injuries sustained by the victim were reportedly severe enough that emergency medical personnel felt it was necessary to contact CareFlight as the victim’s right ankle was possibly broken and his skull had a two to three inch laceration with a deformity.

Speaking with Connolly, deputies reported that he said his conduct was in self defense as the victim came to the residence aggressively and because he thought the victim was going to hurt him and another person at the residence.

An arraignment hearing in the case is scheduled for Aug. 19.

Two people indicted for drug possession

Two Urbana residents were also indicted last week in connection to a drug raid conducted by the Urbana Police Division last month.

Joseph P. Comer and Tamazin L. Cobaugh were both indicted stemming from the July 16 raid where Urbana Police executed a search warrant at 338 N. Kenton St. and found drugs, drug abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia. In addition to the residence, police also searched a vehicle belonging to Cobaugh as part of their investigation and drug paraphernalia items were discovered.

Comer, 38, of 338 N. Kenton St., was indicted two counts each of possession of heroin and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia and one count each of trafficking in heroin, and possession of cocaine.

The raid occurred three days after Comer pleaded guilty to possession of heroin, a fifth degree felony, from a separate criminal case. A sentencing hearing in that case is scheduled for Aug. 27.

Comer was convicted of aggravated possession of drugs in January 2012 in a Champaign County Common Pleas Court case. In that case, Comer was placed on community control before it was revoked in August 2012 and he was ordered to serve one year in prison.

Cobaugh, 36, of 338 N. Kenton St., was indicted for two counts of illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia and one count each of possession of cocaine and possession of heroin.

Arraignment hearings for both co-defendants are scheduled for Aug. 19.

The co-defendants were two of 11 people indicted for drug related charges by the grand jury last week.
