Triad board learns about art in the classroom

NORTH LEWISBURG – Triad Local Schools’ board learned more about how its elementary students are experiencing art, following receipt of an Ohio Arts Council grant.

Diane Stemper, an Ohio Arts Council artist in residence, told the board at its March 17 meeting about instruction she is bringing to Triad Elementary students.

Stemper said she met with teachers, beginning at the kindergarten level, to get an idea of concepts they are focusing on in the curriculum. She then developed ways to reinforce those concepts through art instruction. For example, kindergartners were learning about shapes in math, and that translates well into artwork. The next step was getting them to paint animals, using the shapes they learned about.

For first graders, a focus was on shapes and creating self-portraits.

“Art can build self-awareness and empathy for other people,” she said.

The first graders were asked to create self-portraits of themselves playing, so there were pictures of throwing footballs and jumping rope.

Stemper worked with second graders as well, expanding on self-awareness and helping others. She will soon be working with third and fourth graders at the school.

In other action the board:

•Approved senior Riley Walker for early graduation as per board policy.

•Accepted donations of $123.43 from Target for the Elementary Teacher Trust Fund, and $628.21 from the Athletic Boosters (Powder Puff Game) for the Class of 2017.
