A Mechanicsburg man was cited for operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and driving under suspension or in violation of license restriction after a crash on Friday.

At approximately 1:24 p.m. Champaign County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of 491 East Hickory Grove Road on a report of a three-vehicle auto accident with injuries. Urbana Fire and EMS also responded to this location.

According to the investigation, a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Troy HC Copley, age 39 of 6198 E. state Route 29, Mechanicsburg, was traveling eastbound on East Hickory Grove Road. It was reported that this vehicle had crossed over the center line, side-swiping a westbound red 2012 Cadillac driven by Mark A. Rucker of Springfield. The 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier continued and struck a white westbound 2012 Chevrolet hatchback driven by Carla A. Stowe of Urbana. The white 2012 Chevrolet hatchback went off the right side of the roadway into a ditch. This vehicle had extensive damage. Stowe was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier continued eastbound leaving the left side of the roadway going into a corn field.

Sheriff Matthew R. Melvin is reminding motorists to drive safely and to exercise caution when traveling. “As the summer months wind down and citizens are enjoying our local fair and our community, it is imperative that we all use due diligence while driving,” Melvin said in a prepared statement. “Please remember to always wear your seat belt, and utilize safety equipment for children. Remember to never text while driving. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is at your service. In the event of an emergency dial 911.”
