Grimes Field Manager Carol Hall reminded everyone at Tuesday's Urbana City Council meeting of the 44th annual Mid-Eastern Regional Fly-In to be held Sept. 11-12 at Grimes Field. She added that volunteers will be needed for a variety of tasks.
Hall said about 500 planes of all sorts flew into the local airport for last year's event and that at least this many are expected this year. Those wishing to volunteer or to learn more about MERFI can visit merfi.com.
The council authorized a $7,953 purchase order to K&K Petroleum Maintenance Inc. so a deteriorating part of an airport fuel pump can be replaced. Currently, fuel must be pumped manually, which hampers after-hours sales, Hall said. Thursday, July 29, 2010
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio Department of Health has found above-average rates for drug-resistant staph infections at three Dayton hospitals.
Data show Good Samaritan Hospital has the highest rate in the group, more than double the state average. Meanwhile, a county health department official says Miami Valley Hospital had three people with infections diagnosed over a two- or three-day period.
Grandview Hospital is the third Dayton hospital with higher-than-average methicillin-resistant staph infections, known as MRSA (MUR'-suh). A state health department spokeswoman says officials don't believe any one particular hospital is experiencing problems with MRSA. It often begins as a skin lesion and can spread to other organs, potentially causing pneumonia. Wednesday, July 28, 2010
Several firefighters and their supporters sat and stood in City Council chambers at Tuesday's regular session as six individuals pleaded the Fire Division's case that firefighters had conceded much during the first half of this year and were willing to continue voluntary cutbacks as long as the administration did not lay off personnel. Administrators have said two layoffs are necessary for the division to meet mandatory 10 percent cuts.
Firefighter Jason Croker, president of the firefighters union, insisted the division is "currently on budget" and that the union vote was unanimous to continue cuts and forgo the 2.25 percent raise due in November, according to the negotiated contract. Instead, he said, the administration said this would not be enough.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio State Fair's traditional butter cow and calf are accompanied this year by figures from the world of pigskin.
When the fair opens Wednesday, visitors to the dairy exhibit also will see butter sculptures of Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns and Chinedum Ndukwe (CHIN'-uh-doom ehn-DOOK'-way) of the Cincinnati Bengals, along with a giant butter football.
A team of Cincinnati artists worked nearly 400 hours to craft this year's display out of one ton of butter. The figures are housed behind glass and kept refrigerated at 45 degrees.
Last year's fair featured three generations of a dairy family and a veterinarian made of butter.
Butter sculptures have been part of the fair for more than 100 years. Wednesday, July 28, 2010
The sight of Will Frost and his horse "Roxie" has been a spectacle for drivers on U.S. Route 36. The Oklahoma native is traveling to Gettysburg, Pa., by way of horse and buggy to take part in a Civil War re-enactment later this summer. His leather boots, wool hat, canvas pants and overalls are not just his 1860s costume attire. They are his everyday dress.
"I live like this," said Frost. "I try to find people along the way who understand this type of lifestyle ... who I can trade with for clothes and supplies that I need."
"Civil War buffs, beware. I'm looking for your yard sales," Frost added. Wednesday, July 28, 2010
