According to the Ohio county-by-county unemployment figures for September, released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services on Tuesday, Champaign County's unemployment rate is 11.4 percent - the highest in the Dayton region.
Of adjacent counties to Champaign, Clark County's rate is 9.9 percent, Logan County's rate is 11.2 percent, Madison County's rate is 8.5 percent, Miami County's rate is 11 percent, Shelby County's rate is 11.9 percent and Union County's rate is 8 percent.
Champaign County's rate in September of 2008 was 7 percent.
According to U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), more than 64,500 Ohioans will exhaust benefits this year if unemployment insurance is not extended and more than 14,000 will exhaust benefits by the end of October - including 64 in Champaign County.
Brown is calling for Senate Republicans to end a block on legislation that would extend unemployment insurance for an additional 20 weeks for Ohioans. The House already has passed such legislation.
Ohio's unemployment rate is 10.1 percent, down from September's record high but reduced by workers who have dropped out of the market rather than by an increase in available jobs.
