MECHANICSBURG - The Mechanicsburg Library Board announced Friday that state cutbacks have resulted in a decision to reduce hours for the village Public Library. As of Monday, Sept. 28, hours will be noon to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Current hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
A news release states that two staff positions have been eliminated and some programs and services will be reduced.
"This is a challenging time for all public libraries and all of us regret that these tremendous cuts in state funding are forcing us to make very difficult decisions," Board President Shirley Keiser says in the release. "Our board struggled long and hard to determine the best way to preserve essential services for our patrons with a severely reduced operating budget."
The release states the library board and staff reviewed times, services and programs most used by patrons to determine where cuts should be made. Computer services and children's programming were identified as top priorities for patrons and will remain virtually unchanged.
Keiser reported that the Friends of the Library support group is escalating efforts to help the library financially and that more volunteers are needed to work in the library.
